LETTER:Vandals disregard diversity, tolerance
December 3, 2002
On Nov. 18, two separate but similar incidents of vandalism with hate messages were discovered in our Central Campus area. Words that are threatening to LGBT students were spray-painted on exterior building walls in two locations.
The Iowa State Department of Public Safety is investigating this vandalism, which not only defaced public property, but also graphically communicated a message of hatred and intolerance. These acts caused fear and uncertainty among many students. We have communicated with them to offer reassurance and to express our disgust with these acts. This type of threatening and intimidating conduct has no place on our campus.
Our students, faculty and staff have worked diligently to create a supportive and respectful environment for all members of our community. And our students are especially fortunate to have a talented and dedicated staff in the Dean of Students Office to assist them. It is truly unfortunate when a few members of our community choose to hurt others with these kind of hate messages.
One of the benefits of being at Iowa State is experiencing the variety of backgrounds, viewpoints and life experiences brought to the university and our community by our diverse faculty, staff and students. By valuing this diversity, we can all gain from this rich environment to achieve our academic and life goals.
