LETTER:Gathering allowed, without women
December 5, 2002
In response to Mr. Maytal’s Dec. 3 column, “Masters makes Augusta a public course,” it is stated in the very first article of the constitution that Congress shall make no law abridging the right of the people to peaceably assemble. This very statement contradicts every thing that Mr. Maytal stands for.
Augusta National has every right to set standards as they see fit. We, as a nation, have no right to infringe upon the rights of any private organization based on societal norms. If I were to make a club that only admitted left-handed people, I have every right to do this, even though it would exclude a significant amount of the population.
Augusta National has not broken any laws by admitting only male members, and therefore, no outside party has any right to dictate who they can and cannot admit to their organization. I do not stand for the stand for the exclusion of women from activities, but a private organization has every right to do so.
