Bicyclist struck and killed by train

An Ames man was struck by a Union Pacific train and killed Monday morning, according to Ames Police.

Jonathan Schutt, a 30-year-old Ames resident, was riding a bicycle southbound on the pedestrian walkway near the intersection of Main Street and Duff Avenue when he was hit by an eastbound train.

Cmdr. Jim Robinson, of Ames Police, said the incident was an accident.

“The investigation shows the safety equipment was functional,” Robinson said. “It just appears to be a tragic accident.”

Man found hiding in closet arrested

A man was arrested for public intoxication early Sunday morning after an ISU student returned home to find the stranger in his closet, said Jim Robinson, Ames Police.

Jonathan Ehmen, sophomore in liberal arts and sciences, said he returned home to his apartment, 200 Stanton Ave. 701, at about 1 a.m. Sunday morning and heard a noise. Ehmen said he then noticed a man run from his upstairs bedroom and into his roommate’s bedroom.

Ehmen went upstairs where he found a man, later identified as Tim Eisenlohr, hiding in a closet.

Ehmen said he asked the man for identification and threatened to call police when the man did not respond.

Ehmen said he chased the man out of the building. Police arrived a short time later and arrested Eisenlohr.

Nothing was taken from the apartment, Ehmen said.
