LETTER:Candidates who cared were in Daily
November 11, 2002
In response to Chad Hayward’s letter, “Liberals before journalists,” (Nov. 7): From what I understand from campaign events on campus this past couple of months and from the news in the Daily, the Daily was on the ball for what they covered in Wednesday’s edition.
First of all, John Norris’ campaign headquarters were located in Ames. Was any Republican candidate’s headquarters in Ames? Absolutely not. In fact if you want to find the Story County Republican Headquarters, the average person wouldn’t be able to. Their Web site just lists a P.O. box. Also, how many of the Republican candidates came to Ames? I only remember Doug Gross coming to Ames once. The rest didn’t, which makes it obvious that they don’t care about college students’ views.
Finally, how many of the Democratic candidates came to Ames to campaign? Simple, a lot. Senator Tom Harkin came to Ames at least three times. He also brought with him Christopher Reeve and Sen. Daschle. Gov. Vilsack came here a lot as well. And as far as John Norris, he campaigned on campus countless times.
That’s why Vilsack won the votes of Iowa State students and the rest of Story County. John Norris ended up with a lot of coverage in the Daily since he gained the respect of many Story County residents and students. It was definitely in the Daily’s best interest to give Harkin, Vilsack and Norris more coverage than the Republicans since they worked and earned it. All that happened was Latham got lucky. Now it’s time for you to take your losses and wins, and suck it up.
