Police seek clues to ‘unprovoked attack’
November 12, 2002
A Maple Hall resident reported being assaulted by an unknown male on a Lincoln Way bridge early Sunday morning, according to ISU Police.
Capt. Gene Deisinger of ISU Police said the victim reported walking westbound on Lincoln Way near the Squaw Creek Bridge at about midnight when the attack occurred. The victim reported that he saw a male walking toward him.
“The person approaching him was staggering, acting like he needed help,” Deisinger said.
The victim asked if the man needed help. The man refused help and continued to walk east on Lincoln Way, Deisinger said.
After the men passed each other, the victim was struck in the back of the head from behind, and kicked once he had fallen to the ground.
The victim refused medical treatment.
Deisinger said police assume the attacker was the same man that had passed the victim on the bridge.
He said police and the victim tried to look for the male in the area of the attack but were unable to find him.
Police are still looking for the suspect.
“At this point we are asking the public if anyone was in the area at that time and may have seen the assault,” Deisinger said.
The suspect was reported as a male, about 6 feet tall, with shoulder-length dark hair, Deisinger said.
At the time of the incident, the suspect was wearing a white baseball cap and a red short- sleeved shirt.
Police have not yet released the name of the victim.
Deisinger said police have no reason to believe the victim knew the assailant and revealing the victim’s name might jeopardize the victim’s safety.
“It appears it was an unprovoked attack with no other motive,” Deisinger said.
Deisinger said if they are able to locate the assailant he would most likely be charged with a serious misdemeanor.
