Men’s hockey falls to Delaware
November 18, 2002
Chris Ferazolli had two goals and dished out two assists to lead the fourth-ranked University of Delaware Blue Hens to a 4-1 win over ninth-ranked Iowa State in a American Collegiate Hockey Association contest on Friday night.
In the first period, Dan Howard scored the first goal for Delaware off an assist from Ferazolli at the 1:09 mark. Iowa State had opportunities to tie the game but couldn’t converted. ISU freshman goalie Darren Helmkamp denied some scoring chances that Delaware tried to put in the first period.
Howard scored his second goal of the game as Ferazolli fed him early in the 1:49 mark of the second period. Early in the period, the Cyclones appeared to cut the lead to one, but Iowa State couldn’t put the puck into the net.
“They really had a good player, No. 11, that had a lot of points and made some good plays and got the puck pass us a couple of times tonight,” said Helmkamp, who had 25 saves on the night. “The puck wouldn’t go in for us. My defense did a good job. They let me see the puck, and I’m a lot more likely to save the puck when I get a good clear vision of it. They did that in the third period and we were able to shut them down, except for one time.”
Ferazolli scored his first goal in the game in the second period on a four-on-four scoring opportunity at the 15:23 mark from an assist from Bryan Reilly.
Iowa State got on the board late as Brent Popadych tipped in a power play goal with :44 seconds left in the period. Mike Moren assisted on the play.
“Everybody was saying in that whole second period ‘We need a goal’. We can’t be down 3-0 and expect to get some momentum out of anything,” Popadych said. “Down 2-0, we’re still in the game and we were ready to go. That goal was huge for us. It was a packed house and the crowd came right behind us. They knew that we were in it.”
Helmkamp said the late second period goal Iowa State scored brought the game a lot closer.
“A two goal lead is the most dangerous lead in hockey. We just couldn’t get any more pucks to bounce in the net for us,” Helmkamp said. “We’re a young team. We’ll learn from it and keep working and eventually we’re going to win these close games.”
At the 15:11 minute of the third period, Jeff Early fed Ferazolli for his second goal.
ISU head coach Dr. Alan Murdoch said Ferazolli had a big impact in the game.
“That No. 11 for them, he’s a Division I player. He had a school on a full-ride scholarship and he choose to come to Delaware,” Murdoch said. “The game was one of those things were we had a pretty good game plan. We knew it would had to be a physical game and it was. We out shot them all three periods.”
Murdoch said the team is very young with only one senior.
“We had a freshman at the net. We’ve got eight freshman in the lineup playing regular shifts, playing on the power play, playing on penalty killing,” he said.
“When you stop and think about it in the second period, we took 18 shots on them. I don’t know how some of them didn’t go in. It was unbelievable. I’ve never heard the crowd go ‘Ohhh and Ahhh’ so many times on the puck being there and not going in.”
