EDITORIAL:Big races for Senator, Attorney General
November 5, 2002
U.S. Senate
When going to the polls today, consider Sen. Tom Harkin as your choice for Iowa’s U.S. senator. Harkin, an ISU alumnus, is seeking his fourth term in the U.S. Senate. Through his experience, he has been a champion for the rights of the disabled and handicapped and is the first Iowan to head the Senate Agriculture Committee in almost a century.
In 1990, Harkin authored the Americans with Disabilities Act, a landmark legislation victory that protects the rights of U.S. citizens with physical and mental disabilities. The act has affected the construction of every building on campus, making facilities more accessible to people with handicaps. The act also prevents discrimination against those with disabilities in the workplace, state and local government services and transportation.
Harkin has also been a strong advocate for Iowa’s farm economy, and several organizations such as the Farmers Union and Farm Bureau have endorsed him for the U.S. Senate. It shows that organizations such as these have faith in his ability to not only lead Iowa to a stronger farm economy, but it also shows Iowa’s strength in the Senate and in its agriculture committee.
What Iowa needs is a person who has consistently upheld Iowans’ beliefs in a strong agricultural economy and who is a leader among senators. We know Harkin’s solid track record as a senator and leader, so let’s keep trusting him to do the job that we know he can do.
Iowa Attorney General
Tom Miller, a Harvard-educated attorney who came home to Iowa, is running for his sixth term as state attorney general. Miller’s career has spanned volunteer service with VISTA, teaching at the University of Maryland law school, practicing in McGregor and serving as the state’s attorney general for twenty years. In that time, he’s led the charge against predatory telemarketing scams targeting elderly Iowans and has successfully advocated on behalf of Iowa farmers against large chemical companies. Moreover, he worked to obtain compensation for Iowa farmers who sustained losses after growing StarLink corn.
One of Miller’s most renowned efforts was when he spearheaded the fight against Big Tobacco. Miller led larger states in forcing tobacco companies to pay up after years of misleading consumers. Now, Miller is poised to take on Medicare and Iowa’s dismal rate of compensation. When the rest will wax on about Medicare, Miller may actually be the best in the state to take it on. We endorse Miller for Attorney General.
