LETTER:Scheduling unfair to paying students
November 13, 2002
It’s that time of the year again. You know, the time when everyone is spending hours on AccessPlus trying to get their schedule perfect for next semester. For many of us this isn’t an easy task, because every class you need is full.
I always wondered how classes could fill up so fast, so I started digging around. I was told by the school that people sign up in order, due to the number of credits they have. I believed this line of bull until this year, when I became a junior.
As a junior, I am still taking freshman/sophomore classes and still having the same problems as before, even though I easily have more credits than all of the underclassmen.
This is when I found out what is really happening. I stumbled upon the real answer one afternoon when I was talking with some friends about when they sign up for classes. One of them is a sophomore and got to register on Oct. 24, but I, the junior, registered on Nov. 5.
Also, I should add, my friend is taking the same 200-level courses as I. Remembering I have more credits, how is it possible for a sophomore to sign up almost two weeks before I do?
Well, as it turns out, my friend is on a full-ride minority scholarship and that is why they register so early. Isn’t it enough that they already go to school for free? Why should they be able to sign up for classes two weeks before someone who is paying every dime?
I’ve already tried to talk to administrators about my finding. They sent me on the runaround and I never got a straight answer to my question.
Hopefully this letter will raise some eyebrows around campus and maybe something can be done about this.
