Swimming team beats Illinois State; volleyball team swept by Colorado

Swimming and diving team wins two

The ISU swimming and diving team (2-1) made it a clean sweep this weekend with a 136-85 win over Illinois State.

Saturday’s win over the Redbirds was the second in as many days for the Cyclones, as they topped Western Illinois 154-78 on Friday in Macomb, Ill.

Two-time ISU most valuable swimmer Petra Plaminkova once again led the way, setting a new Horton Pool record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.75, to finish first.

Plaminkova was also second in the 200 freestyle (1:55.73), just .21 seconds behind winning teammate Melissa Jensen who recorded a time of 1:55.52.

Senior Rena Kelinson edged out Illinois State’s Monique Witkowski to win the 50 freestyle with a clocking of 24.87.

Junior Lara Skoog took first-place in the 1,000 freestyle (10:26.46), as did teammate Brita Benson in the 200 IM (2:11.62).

Other first-place winners for the Cyclones were Sam Dyshaw in the 100 freestyle (54.12), Kim Rogers in the 200 backstroke (2:09.65) and Carmella Nogar in the 500 freestyle (5:12.15).

In diving, junior Linda Wagner scored a total of 246.975 points on the 1-meter board to take home first-place honors.

Freshman Hillary Nichols finished fourth with a total of 221.325 points.

Iowa State will next travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for the three-day Minnesota Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota on Nov. 22-24.

Colorado sweeps volleyball team

Mandi Harms and Brittany Dalager had 10 kills each and Katie Kruenegel and Ashlie McWee added six each, but it wasn’t enough as Colorado defeated Iowa State in three games (3-0) Saturday night in the Coors Events Center. Senior setter Sara Stribe had 31 assists and a team-high 13 digs to lead the Cyclone cause.

The loss drops Iowa State to 10-17 overall and 1-14 in league play.

The team travels next week to Lincoln, Neb., to take on No. 4 Nebraska on Wednesday. First serve is set for 7 p.m.

The Cornhuskers defeated Iowa State in three games on Oct. 12.
