LETTER:Ganske, not Harkin, is underhanded
October 6, 2002
In response to Sarah Bolton’s misleading and factually inaccurate column: “Attack of the Demo Clones.” I would like to tell the real story behind the Harkin-Ganske race.
Ms. Bolton is right. There was a mistake made, Tom Harkin apologized and has released those responsible for it. Ms. Bolton’s article goes downhill from there. Ms. Bolton is obviously a Ganske supporter.
Bolton even uses Ganske’s rhetoric about “Fair Play,” the tagline from one of Ganske’s race-baiting, anti-immigrant TV ads. If she wants to bash Senator Harkin because of political comments made in a newspaper eleven years ago, or because he ignored her when she was ten, that’s fine. But everyone should know where she’s coming from.
The reality is Greg Ganske has not created a single significant piece of legislation.
Tom Harkin has done so much for Story County and ISU alone that Bolton ought to thank him.
Not only is Tom Harkin chairman of the Senate Ag Committee he is also chairman of the committee that funds education. Iowa State’s labs and facilities receive consistently improved funding as a result of Senator Harkin.
This year Tom Harkin secured over $400,000 in funds (Harkin Grants) to rebuild and modernize Story County schools. Harkin announced $50 million for the Ames lab to study animal diseases.
Last year, Senator Harkin secured $850,000 for Iowa State University for the training of rural mental health providers and $1 million for the creation of a Center for Food Security and Public Health at ISU.
I hope next time Ms. Bolton uses facts instead of rhetorical smears courtesy of the Ganske campaign.
