LETTER:Dave’s a surprise, not a deception
September 30, 2002
I’m sorry Mr. Alm feels the “Do you agree with Dave?” campaign is based on deception. People will not be unhappy with you because you uncovered our “subterfuge” or “deception,” but in that the surprise was spoiled. When a person comes up to ask an “I agree with Dave” shirt-wearer what the campaign is about, it is more likely a conversation will result between the two sides rather than by reading a letter in which there is no dialogue. You could not tell people who Dave is, but people in the green shirts can; once we tell you, you are free to walk away. Perhaps your friends should reconsider throwing surprise birthday parties for you, lest you misconstrue them as a deception.
