LETTER:Illegal does not equal immoral

I am writing in regard to Casey Muhm’s letter in the Oct. 25 edition of the Daily.

I find it very concerning that a political science major would be so callous.

He must not remember who his ancestors were.

The Declaration of Independence was essentially a list of excuses why our ancestors, a colony of England, would declare war on their home country.

This is essentially an act of treason.

As Americans, we would all agree that this act was justified, but definitely illegal.

To further illegitimize the acts of our ancestors, we stole much of the southwestern United States from what is now Mexico.

Today we continue to screw our neighbors to the south with “free trade” that does nothing more than keep the nation in poverty.

Mr. Muhm is correct in saying that the immigration laws were written to protect us.

The question he should ask himself is what expense do these laws have to the rest of the people in the world?

If we were to eliminate all our immigration laws, I agree that the standard of living of all Americans would drop, perhaps significantly.

Is this a bad thing?

Why do we deserve to have a standard of living so much higher than the rest of the world anyway?

We got this standard of living by killing and stealing.

I can’t say that I have the answer; however, I think we should all look at these issues with a little more compassion.

The only difference between the people who died such a horrible death and “us” is the country where we were born.

We’re all just trying to live the “American Dream.”
