Students in the College of Agriculture will get an opportunity to showcase their activities this week during Agriculture Week, which runs through Friday.

“Ag Week is an opportunity for students in the College of Agriculture to showcase their clubs and activities,” said Shara Engel, senior in public service and administration in agriculture and Ag Week committee co-chairwoman.

“The purpose of Ag Week is to promote the College of Agriculture and to get the students involved,” she said.

Amber Wiebbecke, Ag Week co-chairwoman, said the week also gives clubs and organizations within the college the opportunity to get word out about what they do.

“Each club in the College of Ag is able to sponsor an event in Ag Week,” said Wiebbecke, senior in Agricultural education.

Engel said some of the highlights of the week include the Agriculture Career Fair, the Chili Cook-off and campus barbecues.

Jen McGivern, senior in animal science and vice president of the Pre-Vet Club, which is one of the clubs sponsoring the Chili Cook-off, said her club enjoys being involved with Ag Week.

At the cook-off, Ag clubs can enter samples of their chili and all the entries will be judged by faculty members.

She said eight to 10 entries are expected in this year’s cook-off. Recipes will be selected for awards like “beaniest chili” and “tastiest chili.”

Wiebbecke said Ag Week also promotes friendly competition between participating organizations.

Sign-in sheets at all the events keep track of how many members from each club participate in the activities.

Wiebbecke said clubs are awarded points for participation, and the club with the most points at the end of the week gets to take home the traveling trophy.

Ag Week is planned by a committee on Agriculture Student Council, Engel said. The committee began brainstorming for Ag Week activities last spring, but the real organizing began early this semester.
