Cyclone soccer team sweeps Big 12 rivals from Sooner State
October 6, 2002
ISU soccer fans who attended Sunday’s game against the Oklahoma Sooners may have been frozen by a stiff crosswind, but the Cyclones are hot after a 2-1 double-overtime victory earned them a clean sweep over Big 12 rivals Oklahoma and Oklahoma State this past weekend.
Although Iowa State led Sunday’s game with 16 fouls, Oklahoma’s ninth foul proved costly when sophomore midfielder Kelly Burke converted on a free kick by defenseman Erin Weldon in the 114th minute.
“The goalkeeper bobbled it and we finished it,” said Weldon, who initiated the game-winning goal with a free kick up the middle into a horde of players.
“We had one of our forwards squatting on the ground, and I just came in and tried to hit it as hard as I could into the goal,” said Burke, describing her second goal of the season.
Mission accomplished.
The game could have been far different if not for some early key saves by sophomore goalkeeper Karen Hasselman that stifled an early Oklahoma onslaught.
“I think any time any player does anything good it sets the tone,” said a humble Hasselman regarding her early defense.
Hasselman’s teammates responded shortly thereafter when freshman forward Amy Flores converted on a high floating kick from Nikki Gamble at the 8:47 mark.
Flores entered the game second on the team in shots with 22 but still had been held without a goal this season.
The 23rd time was the charm.
“I’ve been trying, trying and trying all season,” Flores said. “It finally went in today.”
Sunday’s windy conditions didn’t make the task any easier for the Cyclones.
“It was definitely a little awkward today; the ball was bouncing everywhere,” Flores said.
The Sooners gave Iowa State a scare at the 68:47 mark when freshman forward Heidi Kohlbacher tied the game off a header by Jenny Jones.
Hasselman could only follow the bouncing ball back into the net.
“It was crazy because you come forward and then you step back, because it came back towards the center of the goal,” Hasselman said.
“I stepped back and the next thing I know … they capitalized on their chance.”
Hasselman avenged the Sooner goal when she thwarted off a shot with one second left in the second half, sending the game into overtime
Hasselman wasn’t the only defensive stalwart Sunday.
Much of the game was marked by strong defensive efforts by Weldon, who turned the rocket boosters up on numerous occasions to break up Sooner attacks.
Weldon, who played midfield last season, also used her speed and dribbling skills to create some offensive chances as well, giving Hornbacher and the Cyclones a versatile weapon from the back.
“I feel comfortable with her if she picks her moments to make a run,” Hornbacher said. “She’s got the speed and athleticism and desire to score.”
The Cyclones entered the weekend on a six-game winless streak, but a 2-1 win Friday evening over the previously unbeaten Oklahoma State Cowgirls got the momentum started.
“We’ve been struggling for a little while, but two wins … we’re on a winning streak,” Flores said.
Burke opened the scoring against Oklahoma State three minutes into the game off of a deflected shot by freshman midfielder Deb Benakis.
Twelve minutes later the Cowgirls’ Jere Boykin banked a shot off of the left post, tying the game at 1-1.
After a few unsuccessful scoring chances late in the game, Iowa State finished off Oklahoma State with three minutes remaining when Benakis converted on a pass from Gamble.
The two wins evened the Cyclones’ record to 5-5-1, after starting the season with three straight wins, and also advanced the Cyclones’ Big 12 record to 2-2.
Both wins also marked Hasselman’s first two starts of the season, despite starting 16 of the Cyclones’ 18 games last season. Hasselman has been battling with junior goalkeeper Beth Chapman for playing time.
ISU interim head soccer coach Rebecca Hornbacher said she has had two strong options in goal all season, but Hasselman’s recent efforts in practice gave her the nod this weekend.
“She stepped up,” Hornbacher said of Hasselman. “I wanted to give her the chance and she’s really done a good job.”
Hasselman said the wins were sweeter because they came against the top two teams in the Big 12 standings, and also because Hasselman is from Broken Arrow, Okla.
The Cyclones’ season continues Friday at Colorado, after which the Cyclones return home to the ISU Soccer Complex for a 1 p.m. matchup against Nebraska.
