LETTER:Bible must be read in context
October 22, 2002
In Dan Skinner’s letter on October 21 he quoted some Bible verses. Here are some more verses for you to read, Dan —
Proverbs 16:20 – Blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.
Isaiah 40:29 – He gives strength to the weary.
Hosea 11:9 – I will not carry out my fierce anger; I will not come in wrath.
Jude 5 – The Lord delivered his people out of Egypt.
1 John 1:9 – God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins.
So, what can we conclude from the verses Mr. Skinner and I quoted?
Nothing!
Why?
Because one cannot expect to understand or conclude anything from the Bible by reading a single verse, or a chapter, or even an entire book. The Bible must be read in its entirety. Only then can one ever hope to draw accurate conclusions from it about God and His character. If you read and study the entire Bible cover to cover and still conclude that God is evil, so be it. But don’t take five random verses about God and make a judgement on His character based on them alone. To every verse there is a context, don’t overlook it.
