LETTER:Fans: Campaign for Seneca Wallace
October 7, 2002
Eric Crouch was splattered across the state of Nebraska, Joey Harrington stood tall in New York City, and now Jason Gesser has a web site and a 25-by-15 foot banner stretching across a grain elevator in Washington.
Each of these individuals has or is competing for the single greatest award in college football, the Heisman Trophy.
Each of these individuals had their school’s full support during the season and was made larger than life in a few different ways. Crouch had billboards pasted across Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska saying, “Good Luck Eric!”
Harrington graced New York City through a 100-by-80 foot billboard in the center of Madison Square Garden. Marshall, yes even Marshall, spent $7000 and $8000 on Randy Moss in 1997 and Chad Pennington in 1999, respectively, for their bids at the Heisman Trophy.
Now, as Seneca Wallace remains number one in the Heisman trophy race for the second consecutive week according to ESPN.com, I look around at a school that hasn’t done anything to promote his candidacy at all. Maybe it is a financial issue and Iowa State can not afford anything spectacular, but there has to be something that the school can do.
I’d love to see a billboard right when you get into Ames, Iowa, with Seneca’s name all over it. I’d love to see banners outside the stadium with Seneca’s pictures all over them. I just think we need to do something.
This opportunity comes along once every blue moon, especially at Iowa State, so what are we waiting for?
Good luck Seneca.
