October 8, 2002
ISU men’s golfer Drew Dalziel won the Nestle Classic in St. Charles, Mo., Tuesday with a final-round 71, finishing the tournament with a 8-under par 205.
James Lepp of Illinois, Chris Marshall of Kansas, Michael Radek of Missouri and Patrick Nagle of Illinois finished in a tie for second with a 207.
The win was Dalziel’s first collegiate victory in only his second tournament.
The 205 the freshman from Burlington carded was also a new Cyclone record for a 54-hole tournament, breaking the old record set by Matt Lewis at the Red Raider Intercollegiate in 1997.
Lewis’s record had stood at 207.
“Drew played fantastic and it is an unbelievable accomplishment for only his second tournament,” ISU head coach Jay Horton said. “This was not an easy field, consisting of some of the best teams in the country, so that is something that makes Drew’s play even more special.”
Iowa State finished Tuesday with a final round 286 to finish with a total of 853, good for third place.
Illinois finished first at 836 while the host team, Missouri came in second with a 839.
ISU senior Kevin Oswald shot a 212 to finish 16th while junior Jeremy Lyons finished 17th with a 213.
Other ISU finishers were Tyler Swanson and Greg Stephanson who finished in a tie for 54th with 225.
