LETTER:PATRIOT Act is essential to freedom
September 30, 2002
Sept. 11 was the worst intelligence failure this nation has ever experienced, costing the lives of 3,000 innocent civilians. This was not something America had to worry about 226 years ago.
We cannot afford another tragedy like Sept. 11 and we can prevent them by making sure we have effective intelligence.
I highly doubt and can’t think of one reason why the CIA or any other agency would infringe on the civil liberties of a law-abiding American citizen. I think most Americans support strong and effective intelligence and don’t feel we are giving up many liberties.
With all this in mind, I only have one thing to say to people like Fred Iutzi: If we don’t have the best possible intelligence, we may not have any civil liberties left to protect.
