LETTER:We need to avoid war in Iraq
October 2, 2002
Sometimes I wonder if some students on campus really have their priorities in order. When I read the Daily every day. I always make sure to at least skim the opinion section. I have found myself somewhat worried over the concerns of my peers. The letters that scatter the pages are mostly concerned with legalizing marijuana, the locking of dorms, and football games. I am afraid that we young adults do not realize the crisis our nation is in. We are inches from going to war, and no one seems to notice.
I was disappointed on Friday, when working at the Time For Peace democracy table outside the Hub, I realized just how many students are for the war, and even more that just don’t care.
We provided a service of cellular phones for people to call their congressmen to voice their opposition to a war.
During the several hours I was there, there couldn’t have been more than two dozen people out of the hundreds that walked by that stayed and called. This makes me sad.
I do believe that an attack on Iraq is unnecessary and uncalled for. I believe we don’t have enough evidence to support an attack, and if we kill innocent people without just cause, then we are no better than the terrorists that killed the innocent people of our country.
However, putting that aside, we do not realize how much of an effect this would have on our personal lives. I don’t think my fellow students don’t realize that we are of an age now, that if we attack, it is going to deeply affect us.
If there is a war, then it will be our brothers, sisters and close friends that will be going off to fight it. Do you want your best friend going off to put his or her life on the line when there is no just cause? I know I don’t.
So please call, write, and e-mail your senators and representative and tell them not to send our peers off to kill innocent people. We don’t want to be terrorists, do we?
