LETTER:Bolton insults Latin Americans
October 23, 2002
This feedback was posted on the Daily Web site in response to “Arriving legally safest option for immigrants,” Oct. 23.
This column is an insult to Latin Americans anywhere. We might be a small community here at ISU but your lack of understanding of the issue of illegal immigration is appaling. You were born here in the United States and have never experienced firsthand the hardships of life in poorness in Third World countries.
I’m from Costa Rica and although I’m one of the lucky ones to come from a well-off family I see the struggle of the common people. Coming to the United States legally is not so hard if you come from a wealthy family. I had no problem getting either my tourist visa but I had to show them bank statements with more money than most illegal immigrants will see in their whole lifes.
That’s the way to legally come to the United States, it’s only truly possible if you have money.
Also, please refrain from using the word “America” only for the United States, it shows a decided lack of understanding of the fact that “America” is a continent, not just a country, and it goes all the way to South America. This people don’t cross from Mexico to America they cross to Mexico to the United States. Please show a little more understanding and humanity. We’re all lucky to be in the United States, but most of the world is not that lucky.
