LETTER:The challenge of evangelism
September 30, 2002
I am writing in response to Erin Blasdel’s letter of Sept. 27 “Protect my freedom from religion.” I spent much of this past weekend praying for appropriate words for this letter, and finally came up with something that may be helpful. Author C.S. Lewis said once “the great difficulty is to get modern audiences to realize that you are preaching Christianity solely and simply because you happen to think it true; they always suppose you are preaching it because you like it or think it good for society or something of that sort.” I have to admit that until I was 20, I was of the same mind as Ms. Blasdel, but my mindset did a 180 when I was saved at that time. One thing I have come to realize in the past five years is that Christianity is not a “feel-good” religion; there are some very real consequences in choosing/not choosing to accept God’s mercy expressed through the sacrifice of His son Jesus Christ.
While I did not hear the man speaking on campus that day, I can tell you from experience that evangelism is not comfortable for me. I do it simply because of my desire to see other people find what I have found.
