LETTER:Dave, a friendly piece of advice
October 3, 2002
Dave, I must say that I am a little jealous. I wish that I could feel as strongly about something as you do. Your beliefs are rooted deep within you, and no one can take them away. I admire your bravery and willingness to lay your views and feelings out for everyone to judge.
It is fabulous that a group has the freedom to promote its views to the extent this campaign has. However, I can’t help the cringe I felt this week seeing the wave of green shirts, huge advertisements in the paper and table tents at the dining centers. I can’t draw a line for everyone else, but my gut tells me this has edged over mine. The uncomfortable feeling I have can’t be ignored.
Many people have complained about being “forced” to look at your views. Of course you are not forcing anyone to do anything. But there is a difference between offering to share your beliefs with someone and surrounding him or her with them everywhere he or she turns. You can make such a difference in people’s lives without a media stampede. Your desire to help others can benefit everyone, whether they believe in Christianity or not.
Dave, I have a tremendous amount of respect for you. I have enjoyed your friendship since we became floormates at Towers four years ago. Please continue caring for those around you – regardless of their religious beliefs. Good luck, friend.
