LETTER:Evolution facts, fictions and theories
October 10, 2002
The Daily editorial on 10 October 2002 stated that “Evolution is an important scientific concept. It is important to note that it is not a fact, just a theory.” In fact, evolution is a fact, as are gravity and lightning. Life evolved, gravity sucks, and lightning strikes. The theories originated by Darwin, Wallace, Newton, Einstein, and Maxwell are explanations for these phenomena. The Daily editorial on Thursday also stated that “Creationism is a religious theory with no scientific evidence.” It is a scientific theory with not enough evidence and insufficient explanatory power compared to its competitors, so it was abandoned, along with other scientific theories, such as the phlogiston theory of heat, and the theory that maggots are examples of spontaneous creation of life.
