LETTER:Reviewing the meaning of safe sex
October 21, 2002
There are three tenets to healthy sex, no matter what class it falls into — BDSM, homosexuality, or plain old “vanilla” sex. The first is sane — no sex with the emotionally disturbed or mentally ill. While some may consider homosexuals insane, the DSM – IV doesn’t have homosexuality among its plethora of mental disorders. Therefore, homosexuality is legal and considered a sane activity. Second is safe — using contraceptives. And finally is consensual — no sex with minors, animals, drunks, or those who can’t make a sound decision. Homosexuality violates none of these tenets.
Mr. Schmidgall’s letter compared two types of activities that are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Infant rape and genocide is a nonconsensual activity, which is morally and legally wrong.
However, two people having consensual sex, no matter what genitalia they possess, cannot logically be compared to rape.
To compare these two completely different acts is just as poor a logic as columnist Ayrel Clark’s, which Schmidgall raged against in his letter.
If you wish to believe that morally homosexuality is wrong, fine. But don’t attempt to use logic to bash private, legal activities of others.
