LETTER:Hey, Dave …will you marry me?
October 2, 2002
I have noticed, these last days, that the Daily has been flooded with letters about the Dave campaign. The campaign, apparently, is “deceptive,” it’s without a “focus on spiritual truth” and it’s an attempt for Christians to “force their beliefs on others” in a “narrow-minded way.” What if we applied these accusations to another real-life situation, like a proposal?
The Dave campaign, as I understand it, chose not to reveal its intentions until a certain date. Is this “deceptive”? Not any more deceptive than a guy who does not tell everyone before he proposes to the girl he loves.
The Dave campaign, for a while, had people curious. Does this show that the Dave campaign is “not focused on truth?” Just as much as the aforementioned guy is not focused on a real, committed marriage.
Is the Dave campaign forcing its beliefs on others? Not any more than a proposing guy is forcing his proposal on his girlfriend. She can say no, but it was worth a try for the guy, right?
I have read a lot of articles built on an intolerance of Christianity, but I sincerely hope that next time you see a person or group professing a belief or idea, before you criticize it, you’ll take time to consider what it would be like if you applied these beliefs consistently to other situations — like a proposal.
