LETTER:Can the spam, AIT: Filter is a total waste

I would like to join the masses and complain about AIT’s new spam filter.

What precisely does it scan for in each e-mail message to assess whether the message is spam or not? Today I received a very legitimate e-mail from a student about missing an exam. The filter identified the letter as spam!

I understand that AIT has told us repeatedly that the filter is not foolproof and that we still need to be extra careful about blindly deleting messages tagged as spam, but come on.

My student was not trying to sell me anything nor get me to visit some Web site. If the filter cannot do a better job of discerning a student-to-teacher e-mail from spam, then why use the filter at all?
