Cyclones try to forget OU, move on to Texas
October 20, 2002
NORMAN, Okla. — After a 49-3 loss in front of a national television audience, it may be hard to find a lot of positives. But one thing the ISU football team can count on is the fact that their next game against Texas is less than a week away.
When the Cyclones travel to Austin, Texas, on Saturday, they’ll be hoping to erase any bad memories from the loss to Oklahoma and get back on track.
“We cannot let this loss cost us two losses,” ISU head coach Dan McCarney said. “We can’t sit around Wednesday and Thursday in depression over how poorly we played and how bad we got beat by really an outstanding Oklahoma team, and then not get ready for the next top 10 team we’ve got to play.
McCarney said everyone will have their work cut out for them this week in practice.
“I’ve got to do a great job with this team this week, but this is really where you find out about the fiber, character, the leadership of a coaching staff and a football team after a tough loss,” McCarney said.
ISU senior co-captain Zach Butler has been at Iowa State long enough to know what it takes to rebound from big losses.
“We’ve all gotten beat before,” Butler said. “I think we are gonna be fine. We still have a great football team, and we are still gonna pose a threat and everything like that. We’ve just got to put this behind us right now as soon as we get back to Ames and start focusing on Texas.”
ISU wide receiver Lane Danielsen said he doesn’t want to put the loss behind him. After a tough week of practice, he hopes for a better showing against the Longhorns.
“I still think we know that we are a good football team,” he said. “Games like this you have to learn from it and take responsibility from it. We can still win some football games, and we know that we just have to look ahead and try to get better this week and come back.”
The Cyclones (6-2, 3-1) still have their work cut out for them in the upcoming conference games ahead. After Texas, the Cyclones still have Big 12 games with Missouri, Kansas State and Colorado.
“We can still get many goals that we set,” McCarney said. “We are going to do all we can to get back on track and play a lot better football this next week. There are so many tough games out there and we’re in the toughest stretch of any team in America right now with the schedule, but we have to learn lessons from today and move on.”
And bouncing back is something the Cyclones have had some experience in.
“We are not quitters and we still have a whole season left and a lot of big games,” Butler said. “We are going to bounce back from this thing and play Cyclone football. I know I have already put this thing behind me as soon as I am done talking to [the media], and [we have to] get ready for the next game.”
