LETTER:Daily employs sketchy statistics
October 13, 2002
In Wednesday’s front page article, “Few on campus watch Bush speech,” Jeff Murphy and Cavan Reagan conclude “ISU students largely ignored the speech given by President Bush Monday night.”
As evidence, they site that they ” … asked more than 20 people if they had watched the speech and fewer than five said they had.”
The conclusion could very well be accurate, but my question is in what statistics class did Mr. Murphy and Mr. Reagan learn that 20 students is a sufficient sample of ISU’s population of 27, 898 (based on statistics found at http://www.iastate.edu/~registrar/stats/stats-f02.html)?
Furthermore, is this the Daily’s idea of good journalism?
