Women’s golf records solid finish

The ISU women’s golf team completed another top-10 tournament finish by capturing ninth place at the Shoot-Out at The Legends in Franklin, Ind.

The Cyclones, who had won team titles in the previous two tournaments, tallied their fourth consecutive top 10 finish of the fall season.

Iowa State played a strong opening round, but faltered a bit down the stretch, carding team totals of 300, 308 and 306 for a 914 54-hole total. The 914 team score tied the Cyclones’ effort earlier this fall at the Chip-N-Club Invitational, and is good for a second-best all-time 54-hole team score.

Kent State won team competition in dominating fashion, beating second-place Missouri by seven strokes. Indiana, Wisconsin and Illinois rounded out the top five in team scoring.

For the second time in fall season play, the Cyclones were led by sophomore Louise Kenney, who fired rounds of 72, 72 and 79, finishing in a tie for ninth place with three others at 223.

Kenney’s 223 ties her for seventh place on Iowa State’s all-time individual 54-hole efforts.

Karen Dennison of Indiana capitalized on her opening round 68, and captured individual medalist honors with a three-round 212.

Iowa State’s second-best score came from senior Leanne Owens, who carded rounds of 75, 79 and 79, good for a 36th place tie with four other players.

Iowa State is slated to compete in the First Adidas Fall Classic in Point St. Lucie, Fla. on Oct. 21-24.

Add one more for Deb Benakis

ISU freshman Deb Benakis was named Big 12 Soccer Newcomer of the Week.

Benakis received the honor for the second time this season.

Benakis, a native of St. Charles, Ill., was a key contributor on the offensive end in Iowa State’s first two conference victories last weekend.

The midfielder notched her first career assist on Kelly Burke’s goal against Oklahoma State. Later, with the game tied 1-1 in the final three minutes of the second half, Benakis took a pass from Nikki Gamble and drilled the game-winning goal. The goal was Benakis’ third of the season, and she is currently the Cyclones’ second-leading scorer with seven points in 2002.

Benakis also received Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors Sept. 10 after scoring both ISU goals against Northern Iowa.
