Students & alumni get Crazed
October 13, 2002
Last week’s parade and pep rally proved the spirit of Iowa State is still alive and strong in students and alumni.
The Cyclone Marching Band, pom squad and cheerleaders participated in Friday’s parade. Iowa State’s Family of the Year — the Malin family of Seward, Neb. — was also present. Other organizations present included the Barker Brigade, a lawn chair drill team; the Hip Hop Dance Club; and the Cycling Club.
Sunny weather drew parents and children to the parade.
Michelle Huber drove her three children to Ames from Ankeny.
“It’s fun to bring the kids up for some good family fun,” said Huber, a 1991 graduate in elementary education.
Huber said the parade and pep rally were not as popular when she was an ISU student.
“I’m not even sure they had the parade and pep rally back then because [the football team] wasn’t as good then as they are now,” she said.
Homecoming festivities are part of game preparation, Huber said.
“I think it encourages [the] fans to be more supportive of [the team],” she said.
Abbi Jungmann, freshman in preprofessional health programs, and Jill Buchheit, freshman in political science, said they enjoyed the parade.
“We caught the Cyclone Craze and decided to join in the festivities,” Jungmann said.
A friend’s involvement in Yell Like Hell final cuts drew the girls to the pep rally, they said.
The rally showcased the top three Yell Like Hell teams and the football team expressed its gratitude toward fans and supporters.
“Thank you all for the support y’all have been giving us all season,” said quarterback Seneca Wallace to a crowd of about 200 people gathered in the area south of the Campanile.
Head football coach Dan McCarney also addressed students and fans.
“We’ve come a long way to number 11 in America right now,” he said.
McCarney encouraged fans to continue their participation and support for Saturday’s game.
“We’ve turned that stadium into something special with your help,” he said. “We hope to take this to another level and make it a season to remember.”
