AIDS Walk participants to educate, raise money for county coalition

Campus and community members will unite Sunday to raise money for the Story County AIDS Coalition and to bring education about the disease to schools. The event will benefit local residents living with and impacted by HIV and AIDS.

AIDS Walk 2002 will be held at Stuart Smith Park, across from Jack Trice Stadium near Fourth Street and Elwood Drive. A free-will donation will be collected from 2 to 4 p.m.

Kelly Weikum and Tim Clark will speak on AIDS prevention and living with HIV.

A short walk around the park will symbolize support for the cause.

“The main goal is to raise awareness, not money, but we’re hoping to raise at least $100 to give to Story County,” said Nicole Oldenburger, president of AIDS Walk 2002 and sophomore in elementary education.

Christy Madsen, treasurer for AIDS Walk 2002 and freshman in animal science, said that the organizers expect about 150 people to attend and participate in the event.

Oldenburger said she learned an AIDS walk was not planned for this year because previous event coordinators graduated.

She decided to gather her friends and organize the event with them.

“We’ve all worked really hard to organize the walk in a short period of time,” Oldenburger said.

T-shirts are available for those who contribute free-will donations of at least seven dollars, she said. Door prizes and pizza will be provided free of charge.
