No. 22 Iowa State avenged it’s January loss to West Virginia on Saturday with a 77-61 defeat of the Mountaineers.

Though the Cyclones were technically held under their season scoring average, Iowa State still managed to score 25 points more than West Virginia’s roughly 52 points per game that West Virginia had been giving up.

It’s also a 13-point improvement from the 64 points that Iowa State scored against the Mountaineers in Morgantown, West Virginia. 

The offensive star of the night for Iowa State was sophomore Kristin Scott, who continued her hot streak since being inserted into the starting lineup three weeks ago. Scott finished with 29 points on 12-for-17 shooting with eight rebounds.

Also impressive once again was senior Bridget Carleton, who nearly earned a triple double with 23 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Ashley Joens also pitched in 11 points while going 5-for-9 from the field

Defensively, the Cyclones held West Virginia to 37 percent shooting from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arc. The 61 points are also 11 points below West Virginia’s season average, and the loss snaps a four-game Mountaineer win streak.

Leading the way for the Mountaineers offensively was Madisen Smith, who scored 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting. Naomi Davenport added 14 points. 

Meanwhile, the Cyclones held West Virginia’s leading scorer Tynice Martin, who came into the game averaging 19.7 points per game, to six points on 2-of-15 shooting.

The win moves the Cyclones to 18-5 on the season and to 8-3 in Big 12 conference play. The 8-3 record also moves Iowa State into a tie with Texas for second place in the Big 12 standings, with the Longhorns owning the tiebreaker by virtue over their 64-62 win over the Cyclones.

Iowa State’s next game will be on Wednesday, when the Cyclones take on Texas Christian in Fort Worth, Texas.
