LETTER:Views on racial incident and DPS

After the incident on Sept. 28, I decided I would write a letter to the Iowa State Daily about the event. I was surprised when I received a call from the Daily to inform me an article would be written about it. There are a few issues I still wanted to address. Number one, I am an Indian American.

That’s the dot, not the feather. I am not of Middle Eastern descent, but I look like I am. Second is my quote of “I don’t think people understand how conservative and racist Iowa State is.” I guess what I mean is how racist it can be. When I say conservative I am referring to the unwillingness of people to address issues like this one.

Until recently, I feel like I have been treated very poorly by DPS. When an officer told me that if he had witnessed those two idiots calling me racist names he would have arrested us both because I stuck up for myself it was like twisting the knife I had already been stabbed by. I couldn’t believe it. I spoke with Captain Deisinger after I read the article because his and other statements were contrary to what I had already been told. He stuck up for himself, and then tactfully told me he thought I was lying. I know it seems like I am biting the hand that feeds when I go after DPS like this, but I don’t know what else to do. It’s not that they haven’t done their job; it’s that they haven’t done it well. I have taken a lot of anger out on DPS, but I really do appreciate what they have been doing for me.

When someone attacks you just because of the way you look it hurts. It’s hard for me to realize that the first thing some people notice about me is the color of my skin. It’s not fair to be judged so quickly by something so trivial. I don’t like fighting, maybe because I can’t, but I have never wanted to kick someone’s ass more than I did that night. My sister and I have both been threatened on more that one occasion. I hope no one ever has to go through what I have at Iowa State.
