Outrageous offers latest fashions
September 12, 2002
For everyone in the ISU community who has wanted a place where they can shop for clothes with Vin Diesel, Jennifer Aniston and Drew Carey – the wait is over.
Outrageous, 122 Welch Ave., is the newest clothing store to open in Ames and, in a manner of speaking, it offers patrons a chance to shop with those celebrities.
“This store is unique,” said store manager Kristen Monroe. “It has everything from urban wear to name brands.”
Monroe said she tried to decorate the store in a way that would make college-aged students comfortable shopping there.
The walls are adorned with dozens of framed pictures of popular culture icons and various celebrities.
Outrageous sells mostly clothes, but it also offers an assortment of other things – from a life-sized Egyptian sarcophagus to a selection of body jewelry.
Monroe is optimistic about the new store.
“We will have the biggest selection of body jewelry in Ames,” she said. “Our clothes will constantly be rotated with those in our other store in Marshalltown so there will always be something new to see.”
Outrageous just opened on Aug. 19, but some students have already found their way in.
Amy Freiburger, senior in public service administration and agriculture, said she enjoyed shopping in Outrageous.
“We were shopping around town looking for some clothing shops and there are so many around here, we didn’t realize this one was here so we decided to stop on in,” Freiburger said. “The prices are great and there are lots of new and different clothes that I haven’t seen anywhere else in Ames.”
Freiburger also said she liked the atmosphere of the store.
“The dressing rooms are really cool,” she said. “They are the nicest of any store I’ve ever been in.”
Store owner Jay Paglia said the stores prices were “an average of 30 percent less than mall prices.”
The store does give a free gift with purchase, as well as promotional sidewalk sales, and 10- month no-interest layaway, he said.
Monroe lives in Marshalltown where she also helps manage The Apparel Outlet, also owned by Paglia.
Paglia said he wanted to open a store in a more open-minded community and Ames was the town he wanted. He said he is trying to offer ISU students the latest fashions well below mall prices. Every two months Paglia travels around the country looking at the latest fashions that might not make it to the Midwest for a few months or years, he said.
“It’s really just a test store,” Paglia said. “If it goes over great, I’ll put in a bigger one. It’s really up to the students. If they want me here, I’ll stay. I want to be different, yet tasteful. Most of all, I want people who wear my clothes to be noticed.”
