LETTER:With Saddam, I can’t be free
September 12, 2002
I am an American. I am very grateful for the freedoms that I have. Never before in the history of the world has a country given its people so many freedoms. We are free to criticize our government openly, we are free to travel anywhere we please, and we are free to live.
In places like Iraq, all of the rights that we consider fundamentally secure do not exist. If someone criticizes the government, they promptly disappear forever. Iraqis are not allowed to travel for fear that if they had contact with others, they could spread revolutionaries’ ideals. Finally, Iraqis are not free to live. It is up to Saddam Hussein and his murderous regime to decide who lives and who dies.
If Saddam is allowed to have nuclear weapons, what is to stop him from using them? He’s used weapons of mass destruction before on Iran and will most likely feel no remorse if he nukes Tehran, killing thousands.
I am an American. I cherish my freedom. An Iraq with nuclear weapons under Saddam is not only a threat to my freedom, but to the freedom of countless millions. I fully support the president in his campaign to oust Saddam Hussein and establish a democratic Iraq.
