LETTER:Consistency key for `Under God’ debate
September 2, 2002
In the “battle” between Church and State and the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance, what seems to be missed is inconsistency.
I personally don’t care if the phrase is taken out, or left in. However, if the decision eventually is to separate church and state in the Pledge, let’s do the same elsewhere.
Let’s take our “In God We Trust” from our money; “So help me God” from our courtroom and public office oaths; let’s remove the Greco-Roman statues of various Gods from our public buildings, etc.
I don’t care which way it goes . I don’t have to say the phrase if I don’t want to. It doesn’t make me any less a patriot. But let’s investigate consistency.
