Intramural sports offer 48 possibilities

It’s a new school year and students are once again taking part in intramural sports in large numbers.

Gary Greenlee, intramural program coordinator, estimated that 70 percent of ISU students participate in intramurals sometime during their college career.

With 48 sports to choose from, there is something for everyone.

Linda Marticke, intramural program coordinator, said the most popular by far is broomball.

Marticke said that last year 336 teams participated, and she expects a similar turnout this year.

The deadline to register for broomball is September 25.

Some of the other interesting intramurals offered that may come as a surprise to students include curling, foosball and card tournaments.

The new sand volleyball courts have been a great addition to the facilities available at Iowa State. New sports that have been added as a result are sand volleyball, sand soccer and sand football.

Weightlifting is also a new sport.

Greenlee said that last year they “just sort of winged it,” but this year he plans on asking the ISU weightlifting club for advice on how to improve the competition.

Andy Bishop, sophomore in civil engineering, is a perennial intramural participant.

He has played in numerous sports including ultimate frisbee, sand volleyball, flag football, basketball, softball and broomball.

Bishop said broomball was the most fun to play, but it wasn’t his favorite.

“I’ve never done anything like that before, but I liked basketball the best because that’s my favorite sport,” he said.

Bishop hasn’t won a champions T-shirt yet, but he thinks his best shot this year is in softball.

Last year his team, The Green Berets, lost in the championship game.

“This year we’re going to come back with a vengeance,” he said.
