LETTER:We’ll keep Seagrave, even as a professor

The chemical engineering department is confused by the front-page article about Dr. Richard Seagrave that appeared in Thursday’s Daily (“Search to replace Seagrave continues,” Aug. 29.) Admittedly, Dr. Seagrave had quite an adjustment to make in returning to teaching from his year as Acting President.

It was difficult for him not to go to class every day dressed in the splendid regalia of the university’s highest-ranking officer. Moreover, he did not want to give up his privileged parking place in front of Beardshear Hall (which resulted in his car being towed away on several occasions).

But we want to assure the Iowa State community that Richard Seagrave is dealing with these urges in a completely satisfactory manner. He is coming to grips nicely with the transition and assimilating as well as might be expected into the day-to-day operations of our Department.

Consequently, my colleagues and I have voted (almost) unanimously to retain Dr. Seagrave as a valued member of the academic staff, and we see very little likelihood for the need to “replace” him any time soon.

But, of course, we reserve the right to keep our options open.

Kenneth R. Jolls
