LETTER:Non-Iowans need voice in state
September 24, 2002
During Governor Vilsack’s open forum on Monday, I asked him the question, What does he plan to do to help out-of-state students who choose to remain in the state of Iowa and those who choose to leave the state after graduation.Œ
He responded that those students who choose to remain in Iowa would be helped by a no-interest loan program which he is proposing to the state Legislature.
However, those students who wish to leave Iowa after graduation were only wished good luck and invited to return if they wished.
This should be an outrage to the 4,000 undergraduate students from states other then Iowa, not including the 1,200 who are from foreign countries.
While some out-of-state students will choose to remain in Iowa, most will not. Out-of-state students must make politicians realize that while they live in Iowa, they deserve to be treated with the same consideration and respect as a citizen of Iowa.
The only way this will happen is by voting here in Iowa.
