Teams sling mud to raise money

Members of the greek community proved they weren’t afraid to get down and dirty for a good cause on Sunday.

The eighth annual “Dirty Open,” a mud volleyball tournament fundraiser for breast cancer research was hosted by Pi Beta Phi, 208 Ash Ave., at the Brookside Park volleyball courts.

“Breast cancer affects so many women,” said Malynda Mauer, member of Pi Beta Phi.

Pi Beta Phi philanthropy chairwoman, Erin Stille, said 96 teams signed up to play this year. Each team paid a registration fee of $24, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Pi Beta Phi member Leigh Thiedeman, junior in English, said anyone can sign up to play.

The Ames Fire Department hosed down the courts for the tournament, said Stille, senior in graphic design.

This year’s sunny skies and brisk wind also made the day enjoyable, said Chris Lucht, sophomore in engineering and a member of Theta Xi. “It’s all about getting dirty,” he said.

Gooey mud was splattered everywhere and provided many “dunking” temptations, but amid the screams and giggles no one was complaining.

“This is the most fun philanthropy,” Thiedeman said. “How often do you get to roll around in the mud?”

When the mud cleared, a Phi Gamma Delta team called the “Fighting Camels” were deemed the tournament’s winners.
