LETTER:Bursting bubble of Dave mystery
September 29, 2002
Whence this sea of neon green that litters the lawns of our beautiful campus? “Do you agree with Dave?” say the little green signs. But who is Dave?
I cannot tell you who Dave is (I really don’t know), but I have seen all this business on another campus and I can shed some light on this little mystery.
The things that “Dave agrees with” (do you?) are the central tenets of Christianity, and the goal of this grand orchestration, which was organized by several different campus groups, is to make the general student body aware of these tenets, which are to be published in the Daily at some later date.
With this knowledge in hand, the mystery of Dave and his green signs is solved, the subterfuge circumvented.
Those involved with the organization and implementation of this plan may be upset with me for spoiling “the surprise.” So be it. I have done nothing more than to remove the deceptive element from their plan. There is now no trickery, no deception, no subterfuge. Do you not know that the gospel is something to be lived, not to be marketed? You are all still free to share your message. The only difference is that now you will be speaking to an informed student body. Angry with me? If you are, then you are exposed; for I have only averted deception, so you must have wanted there to be deception.
You must have intended to deceive, which is antithetical to your professed purpose. Let the belt unravel and the pants fall.
