Iowans step up for Iowa State
Jack Whitver set a career high with 132 yards receiving Saturday.
The junior from Grinnell also set a personal best with eight catches. Fellow receiver Lane Danielsen, also an Iowa native, caught five passes for a career-high 131 yards. Whitver had two nice grabs on a clock-eating drive in the fourth quarter. Both were good for first downs, giving the Cyclones some breathing room.
Danielsen’s catch with a little more than seven minutes left got another first down for Iowa State and led to a field goal by Adam Benike, making it 33-24 Cyclones.
“We showed resolve and character that we showed against Florida State . only with a better result,” head coach Dan McCarney said.
Big hits for Billups in Cyclone win
JaMaine Billups led Iowa State with 12 tackles Saturday, including a stop in the first quarter when he flipped Iowa running back Fred Russell head over heels. The junior nearly doubled his season tackle total. He came into Saturday’s game with 16 stops.
Billups made the switch to safety before the start of two-a-days after spending his first two years at running back.
Russell, Saunders go down for Hawks
Russell, who shredded the ISU defense for 133 yards in the first half, only had one carry in the second half before leaving with a shoulder injury.
Russell was the nation’s second leading rusher coming into the game.
The Hawkeyes also lost Bob Sanders to a foot injury. The all-Big 10 strong safety had six tackles before his departure.
