LETTER:ISU shouldn’t deny able scholars

In the face of yet another major tuition hike it seems that we have two options. Continue to jack up tuition, or lower the number of students who attend Iowa State. I have been surprised by the unwillingness of both the editorial board and Governor Vilsack to condone measures which would lower the number of students. When it comes down to turning away students because they couldn¡t make the cut or forcing students away because they can’t afford it, I would think that there would be little debate. All that would be necessary to cut down the number of students would be to raise admission requirements. I think many of us have met students and wondered how in the world they even made it into Iowa State. Iowa has an abundance of community and technical colleges which would still serve those that don¡t make it here. Not only would this approach lower tuition, but it would also increase the value of the degrees earned here. It¡s more impressive to get a degree from a more selective university than a less selective one. The factor that decides whether or not a student attends Iowa State should be academic success, not financial well-being.
