City seeks to revive interest in adult band

In an effort to give residents more creative outlets the City of Ames Park and Recreation Department is hoping to spark a renewed interest in music by organizing an adult instrumental band.

The band will be a great way for people who have participated in band or orchestra programs to reacquaint themselves with the instruments they once loved, said Band Director Gene Gross.

“I know for a fact that there are a lot of people in Ames who are still interested in music, but haven’t had the opportunity to stay involved in a band past high school or college,” Gross said.

Though the band will be entirely separate from the Ames summer municipal band and the senior band, it will still strive to meet the needs and desires people have for developing their musical interests, Gross said.

Mike King, auditorium supervisor for the Ames Park and Recreation, with Gross, are in the process of getting the word out about the band, with hopes to begin in spring.

“This is a brand-new program, so we are hoping to bring in the people who like to try new things and those who have always loved music but just haven’t been able to put their talents to use,” King said.

Adults interested in joining the band can sign up at either Park and Recreation office, 515 Clark St., at the Gateway Hills Center or online at www.city.ames.ia.us./parkrec.
