LETTER:If Nebraska loses, Moss needs new job
September 29, 2002
I would like to respond to some topics brought up in the article “If Nebraska loses … ” written by Kyle Moss (Sept. 26). Kyle, I was wondering if you sense a tone of hypocrisy in your own article. By trying to degrade Nebraska football and its fans, aren’t you performing the same role you accuse Husker fans of doing year in and year out? I’m sure you don’t refer to the Cyclone football team as “we” once in a while. All fans of sports refer to their team as “we.” Listen around the game this weekend. Referring to your favorite team as “we” is not exclusive to Nebraska football fans. Thinking that it is exclusive to them is ignorance.
Secondly, have you ever heard of respect? I’ll wager you were one of the Iowa State fans in Kansas City who booed Bobby Bowden after the Florida State game. Saying that “Tom Osborne needs to come to Iowa, and be paraded through the streets of Ames so we can all stand on the side of the street and laugh at him,” is very disrespectful to a coach that never said a bad word about Iowa State’s program. Coach Osborne, Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno all deserve respect as classy coaches that built winning programs at their respective schools. I sense that you’re a little bitter at Osborne for having better football teams than Iowa State during the years he coached (with a few exceptions).
Thirdly, your remarks about Eric Crouch are ridiculous. Hey Kyle, if the Heisman trophy was awarded to the best NFL prospect, Jeremy Shockey or David Carr would have won it last year, and neither one was “the most outstanding college football player” last season. Truth is, Eric Crouch was. Eric Crouch was good his entire career, which hardly constitutes “a fluke” as you called it. Hey Kyle, I bet you thought Troy Davis deserved to win the Heisman (I think he did), and he was definitely not an NFL-er! Truth is, most Heisman winners don’t last long in the NFL. That is why the trophy is specific to college football.
Lastly, if you are tired of Nebraska fans in Iowa, why don’t you move? You seem to have no problem with Iowans who cheer on Michigan, Notre Dame, Florida State, etc. Why all the hatred towards Nebraska? I can only attribute this to your painful childhood memories of the Cyclones getting shellacked by the Cornhuskers. Maybe you’ll think about this next time you see all the ISU students wearing the apparel of their favorite teams.
I would also like to praise you on the ending to your Sports Illustrated-worthy article. “Let me be the first to hold my middle finger to our neighbors to the west … .” is the kind of juvenile crap that should alert your editors to their paper continuing to be the rag it has been in the past.
In conclusion, I would like to issue some advice to Kyle. If you’re going to result to writing sophomoric, asinine articles in the future, remember that after you graduate to not to include these in your portfolio. You just might find yourself unemployed unless you take your tongue out of your cheek. GO BIG RED!
