Women’s cross country team places 16th, men come in 23rd
The ISU men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. Saturday. The Cyclone women placed 16th with 418 points, while the men placed 23rd with 603 points.
Junior Jessica Huff was the first ISU woman to cross the line, finishing 29th out of 196 competitors in the 6,000-meter race, clocking 21:56.
Senior Cara Van Eck finished in 66th place (22:35), senior Jessica Dahlberg placed 90th (23:09), junior Darolyn Trembath placed 113th (23:52), freshman Jill Latham placed 120th (24:17), sophomore Karen McCormick placed 122nd (24:25) and sophomore Debra Wray placed 134th (26:02).
Senior Mike Mwangong led the ISU men, placing 33rd out of 231 finishers and clocking 24:55 over the 8,000-meter course.
Freshman Kristjan Hunter was the second Cyclone to cross the line, finishing 126th (25:56). He was followed by senior Peter Hess in 140th place (26:07), junior Chris Francois in 148th place (26:16), sophomore Ryan Pence in 156th place (26:30), sophomore Craig Cartier in 157th place (26:32) and sophomore Corey Ylinen in 169th place (26:49).
The Cyclone men and women return to action Oct. 5 when they host the ISU Invite at 10 a.m. at the ISU Cross Country Course.

ISU unable to hang with fourth-ranked Longhorns
The fourth-ranked Texas Longhorn soccer team topped Iowa State 7-0 Sunday. Texas improves its record to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12. Iowa State falls to 3-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12.
Texas scored five goals in the first half, including three in the first 20 minutes. Kristen Teter scored two first half goals for the Longhorns, and Kylee Wosnuk added a goal and three assists in the opening period. Texas outshot ISU 21-3 in the first half.
Lauren Field scored two goals in the opening six minutes of the second half for Texas. The Longhorns finished the game with a 29-8 overall edge in shots. Kristina Baumann led the Cyclones with five shots. Baumann leads ISU with 33 shots this season.
Iowa State senior defender Tiffany Belz moved into fourth place on the ISU all-time career games played chart Sunday. Belz has started all 66 games of her career at ISU. Sophomore goalkeeper Karen Hasselman saw her first action of the season, recording two saves in the second half against Texas.
Iowa State continues Big 12 play with a home game against Oklahoma State, Friday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. at the ISU Soccer Complex.

ISU volleyball continues losing streak
The ISU volleyball team fell in three sets at No. 20 Texas A&M, Friday night in the G. Rollie White Coliseum. Freshman Amanda Craig paced the Cyclones with five kills and 10 digs on the night. The loss moves ISU’s overall record to 9-6 and to 0-4 in Big 12 action. With the win Texas A&M improved to 10-3 on the year and to 2-2 in league play.
The Aggies dominated the match offensively and defensively, hitting .250 from the floor and collecting 64 digs. Texas A&M committed just 18 hitting errors on 127 attacks. The Cyclones were limited to 27 kills, and a -.016 hitting percentage.
ISU’s Dana Koziol had 15 digs and senior Sara Stribe had four kills, 14 digs and 21 assists to help the Cyclone cause on the night. Stribe now has 2,372 career assists, which places her fifth on ISU’s all-time career list. She needs just 97 assists to move into fourth place, currently occupied by Kary Law. With her five kills tonight, Craig only needs five more to break the century mark for kills.
Texas A&M was solid in game one as they hit .263 for the floor, while collecting 15 kills and just five hitting errors. ISU tallied 38 k kills, but was able to register just seven kills in a 30-15 opening game loss.
The Cyclones were tougher defensively in game two, limiting the Aggies to just 13 kills on 34 attacks, but ISU managed just six kills on 33 attacks and fell, 30-17.
Iowa State rebounded in game three and got its offense rolling again, registering 58 attacks to Texas A&M’s 55, but the Aggies had 16 kills to ISU’s 14 and hit .127 from the floor to the Cyclones’ .103 and claimed game three 30-26 and the match 3-0.
Iowa State will travel to Columbia, Mo., to take on Missouri on Wednesday, Oct. 2 in the Hearnes Center. First serve will be at 7 p.m.
