Game, tailgate are central

Students are either planning on spending this weekend with their families, or catching up on homework.

Krissy Baumann, senior in interior design, said “I’m working on my autonomous office,” when she was asked what she had planned for Family Weekend.

For most students, the biggest Family Weekend event will be the university-sponsored tailgate and the game against Troy State.

Many students have plans to attend the game with their families when they are in town this weekend. Ellen Dunseth, advisor of the Student Alumni Leadership Council’s Family Weekend planning committee, said about 1100 people have already registered to attend the tailgate before the game.

The number of people who will attend Family Weekend is looking higher than last year, Dunseth said. She said, the mood of the activities will be “somber and geared towards family.”

All of the events are planned in “great taste,” Dunseth said. All members of the family, of any age, are welcome to attend. That way, students with even elementary age siblings will be able to attend, she said.

Dunseth said all university-sponsored events will be alcohol-free to ensure that all family members are welcome. Those who are found to be intoxicated will be asked to leave.

Dunseth said there have been no extra security precautions taken.

All of the events are open to all students, no matter where they live. Only one event takes place in the residence halls. A Sunday brunch for students and parents will be held in university dining rooms, Dunseth said. Students who don’t live in the residence halls are welcome to attend for a fee.

It is expected more families of freshman and sophomore students will attend than families of older students, Dunseth said.
