UBS will help Pooh Bear celebrate 76th
September 5, 2002
He’s a chubby little cubby all stuffed with fluff, who lives in the Hundred Acre Wood. And he’s turning 76.
Winnie-the-Pooh will be making an appearance at his very own Birthday Bash at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Pioneer Room of the Memorial Union, courtesy of University Bookstore.
The celebration is free to the public and is a part of the UBS Story Time program for children and their families.
At Pooh’s Birthday Bash, participants will have a chance to listen to their favorite stories, enjoy snacks, meet Pooh and take part in many activities, such as button-making, courtesy of the Memorial Union Workspace.
“I think it’s so exciting,” said Sadja, marketing supervisor at UBS. “Winnie-the-Pooh is amazing. He covers every age.”
Amy Wheeler, UBS marketing assistant, said the bookstore sponsors Story Time programs throughout the year.
“We have a couple more being planned,” said Wheeler, senior in advertising. “Usually we have two or three a semester.”
For the big event, the Story Time program has moved from its traditional location in the Memorial Union Pine Room to the Pioneer Room, which offers more space.
“It was just too crowded with the kids, parents and strollers,” said Joyce O’Donnell, UBS general book buyer/supervisor.
“There just wasn’t enough room before.”
The staff expects a large turnout, not only because of the event’s promotion, but because Pooh will be present.
“We wanted to do this event last year, but it turns out you have to book the costume almost two years in advance,” Sadja said. “Mostly we were afraid people wouldn’t show without a character.”
“It shows that we care,” she said. “We’re bringing other parts of the university in and working together.”
Sadja said activities like this one are part of UBS’s duty.
“Our mission is to provide educational services and resources. We don’t do it for publicity, but as an important part of education,” Sadja said. “Plus, everybody loves Pooh.”
