LETTER:Paving the way for intervention in Iraq
September 15, 2002
There is much talk of invading Iraq soon. I think this is a good idea. The world will not be with us if we just invade with no diplomacy. There will be a call for weapons inspectors to go back in before we invade.
Iraq has constantly deceived, harassed, and flat out lied to weapons inspectors. Iraq has been in violation of UN sanctions since 1998. I believe that if inspectors go back into Iraq, the same thing will happen this time. Then the world will believe there is no proof to invade and Saddam will remain in power. Instead of an invasion, and in addition to weapons inspectors, here is a third option. Send in the weapons inspectors, accompanied by 50,000 U.S. troops. They will be there only to ensure the weapons inspectors see every suspect site. They will also be there to gather any proof of these weapons of mass destruction. It is unlikely Saddam will ever agree to this plan, which would open the door for U.N. intervention and the United States will have the coalition it wants to invade.
