LETTER:Liberties threatened by neo-Tories

In his Friday letter, College Republicans Chairman Michael Dale lets us know that the government “just isn’t going” to abuse its increasingly unchecked power to intervene in Americans’ daily lives. Rather, he trusts that “action” will only occur on the basis of “credible intelligence,” the origins of which are a secret to citizens.

The establishment of safeguards over civil liberties – like limitation of the government’s ability to infringe on the privacy of a citizen’s person and property – was a basic founding principle of this country. Given that 226-year tradition, it’s difficult to understand how the leader of a major campus political organization could so lightly dismiss the importance of those safeguards.

I’m not sure what political category Mr. Dale’s indifference to liberty falls into today, but if the year was 1776 I would’ve known exactly what to call him: a Tory.
